Open Stage Night @ Nathan P. Murphys’

Open mic night is a common occurrence in Springfield and has been for many years. The shyness of the performers, the work-in-progress songs; it’s all part of the experience of seeing music’s breeding ground exposed and put in front of the public and of making performers of people who wouldn’t go onstage otherwise. Many such weekly gatherings have come and gone over the years in venues across Springfield, but this marks the first we’ve seen with sponsorship.

The Open Stage Night held in honor of Nathan P. Murphys’ 28th anniversary a couple of months ago was such a success that the club decided to make the event a biweekly (i.e. once every two weeks) monthly event, held on the second Wednesday of each month, and the first one will be next Wednesday, November 11.

It is, in fact, an open mic night–the rules and setup work the same–but the name is changed to drive home a point: The show is available to bands as much as it is to individual performers. Want to try your band’s new material out on an audience before playing an official show? You can. Got some solo acoustic material you’d like to play? You can do that too. Again, many open mic nights offer the same opportunity; it’s just explicitly stated here. Guitar Center is even providing a backline of drums for each event to keep the transitions smooth. However, amps and guitars will NOT be provided.

The event is FREE to attend, and the first Open Stage Night kicks off Wednesday, November 11. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music begins around 7:30.
